Developing towards 6

Since my inception of sirkitree.net, my goal has been to have a site that showcases and keeps progress reports on the work I'm doing with Drupal and to be working progressively towards Drupal 6. I kept quite below the curve on 6 pre-beta and all of it's changes because I was still so focused on learning things for 5, but once the Betas started hitting the street, I broke down and started paying more attention, then started this site.

Some may know that I have a couple of modules that I've been developing and this domain will also be used to help bring those modules into the Drupal 6 era, serving as testing grounds for the conversion under sub domains of sirkitree.net, and then sirkitree.net itself will be the portal to those works. This first of all ties my name (sirkitree) to the work I've been doing with Drupal and gives me some organization -- translate: piece of mind.

So now to the modules themselves.

Activity Module

robertDouglass is currently doing most of the work (ok all ;) on the 5--3 branch which I'm pretty excited about. I've learned a lot just from watching him go through my issue queue and by the code he churns out for new features and expanding on old ways, such as creating separate modules for extended functionality instead of just including .inc files. There are some big plans for this module and a lot of potential, expecially with all of the 'pulse' type features of newer social networking websites.

Smackdown Module

This one, though highly used by my main website I work on, has somewhat fallen by the wayside as of late. But it is the first module I plan on converting to 6 with the help of the coder module. I also started a documentation section for this one in the drupal.org handbook with the goal of writing about how to theme it, since this seems to be one of the hardest things to do with it currently.

Theming

This project will most likely be my first attempt at a social networking site in Drupal 6. As part of that, I'm going to use it as my testing/learning grounds for Drupal 6 theme development. There are also some intriguing Drupal 5 modules out there that I plan to incorporate as they convert to 6, and this'll give me a good reason to help out on some of them.

The one other thing worth mentioning, is that as progress goes forth on these project, I'll be blogging about them on their respective sites, giving status updates and thoughts and whatnot, and then aggregating those posts back here to sirkitree.net as a kind of 'front page' for these sandboxes. Fun stuff!
